The Hidden History of Place Names

A 12-part history series, presented in the Irish and Ulster Scots languages, revealing the hidden and shared past of the streets and towns of Northern Ireland.

12x 30mins, by The Foghorn Company, first aired 17th March 2020

In the company of presenters Kathy Clugston and Linda Ervine, we time travel with historians, linguists, wonderful authors, and experts from Queen’s University Place Names Project, Belfast and the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris.

“It’s been too easy for people to define us by the history of the last fifty years, but more fascinating to hear about the places and the characters from life, legend, literature and song across thousands of years in the province of Ulster and beyond.”

Each episode focuses on a particular county and illuminates the character of Armagh, Antrim, Derry/Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone. Listeners are invited to open a Google Map – or even an old atlas – on the page for each county being explored. The evocative sounds of nature, water, wind and trees are ever present, as they were for our ancestors.
